The earliest Group B WRC was dominated by Lancia 037 (1983 winner) and Audi Quattro Sport (1984 winner), both of them were developed based on the existing road cars, although the Audi received heavy modifications. But the real competition started in late 1984, when Peugeot entered the purposely built 205 Turbo 16, a mid-engined, 4-wheel drive nimble car. It won the title easily from Audi's hands in the next season. Ford entered RS200 in 1985, with ambitious plan but so-so result. Lancia Delta S4 suddenly stormed the field as it won its debut race in 1986, and still dominating the driver's championship as well as manufacturer championship until the moment that its leading driver Toivenen died in a crash. So Peugeot seized the chance and retained its title in the final season of Group B.
