I personally have a 1990 Mustang 5.0 hatchback, and I have a 5" Cowl-I nduction hood just to clear my Fuel Injection Intake manifold... Sheet met al (Ported) RAP box Upper, (Ported)1" Spacer, and (ported) Gt-40 Lowe r... in some cases a HUGE cowl hood is needed... and when done right they look pretty darn good too... especially when the front end is 4 feet in th e air...

There's alot of skill and engineering required to drive the auto races that you mention F1, Lemans, WRC etc!!! My personal favorite endurace racing is RALLY!!! Love how those awd Suburu's, pugeo's(hope I spelled it correct ly), and even rally ford focus's tear it up on the country side road coars e. THAT'S real!!!!

(Quote: The reason they did things like fastbacks is because w hen you're p ushing a block through the air that ends with a very large, ab rupt blocky structure, at certain speeds it tends to create a vaccuum behi nd the vec hicle. Quote) You've answered your own question about how cowls work, just like drafting sorta. About the tailgate thing I'm not gonna doubt you, you may be right. I don't know everything, but I do know experience. Chuck Samuel of fasttimes motorworks in morton grove ill a co uple of years ago used to campaign a stock suspended 65 elcomino that woul d consistently run 9.30's @ 146mph in the quarter with the tailgate down. I personaly asked him how much it killed his et with it up and he replied, it suffer an apoximate 1 second loss, the tailgate open also may have hel ped in weight transfer as he only ran 9" wide slicks. He was superstr eet world champ in this truck several years and there are alot of other gu ys that run without them all together. Manufacturing contraints did play a big role in why they didn't produce very aerodynamic auto's or in fact th at many and they actually in most cases lost money on those cars due to la ck of popularity and public interest. In the 60's engineering and testing on exotic aero designs have been proved and defined by exotic car engineer s, and manufacturers for years before they attempeted. All that aside both the dodges, and the gm cars I mentioned earlier were both in fact wind tu nnel tested not untested assumptions. They knew axactly what did what and could acount for ALL the mods done to them that differed the from their st andard production countrparts on those particular cars. By the time the 80 's came around wind tunnel testing for the most part became mainstay for a ll cars even economy cars for mileage purposes.

I forgot to add that if you look at the induction system on current nascar automobiles, they use a rear opening box sealed to the firewall to again t ake advantage of the high presure at the base of the windshield. Anybody t hat can make 700 restricted hp last for 500 miles at 200mph can't be just a dumb ol country boy. Can I get a AMEN!

Test have been done conducted and confirmed that they do infact work it's s imple physics. Can you explain to me why fast backs are preffered for &quo t;sustained" high speed v.s. the cutoff notch backs? The same reason why chevy for one year offered the aero coupe monte SS, and pontiac the ae ro grand prix, I believe it was 87 or 88 corect me if I'm wrong on the yea r. They realized that the severe drop or flat rear window alowed too much turbulance and created drag. Chrysler also did this way back in 69 on the rear window with their very limited production charger 500 and pointy nose d daytona charger till nascar outlawed them. To answer your question about the tailgate down.
