Offcourse, i would also dial the rod before machining it. But i think this video was nice cause it just shows us where the material can be taken off the rod.

ynnor20 Ive heard lots of tool chatter my point is he did not check to see if the rod was in the chuck square he just relied on pushing the rod up against the chuck face which for this application i feel is just not enough he did not use a dial indicator to make sure that the face of the rod was parralell to the chuck. A three jaw chuck can also run out .005 to .010 so i would want my parts in the chuck as square as possible so everything cut even so when i finished all the rods weight would be closer.

torgschevys, i belive when you say you have been a machinist for 18 years, but it surprices me if you havent heard tool chatter like this when you are machining on an uneven and forced surface like this. When he takes material of the big end he dont have to take of the small end too. The point is that all the big ends have to be the same weight. The small ends the same...etc. And the total weigt of the rod have to be the same. And please, keep cool.

You didn't even dial the rod face in to see if it was running true. looked a little half a ss to me. The tool chatter sounds really professional also. Now where are you gonna take of all the material on the small end of the rod to keep it balanced? As far i'm concerned all your video showed was how to ruin a perfectely good set of rods.

Very interesting video. Just never did like the sound of a rough grind though. Always sounds like it's going to bite.
