cool vid.
I dont think you touched on the extra tire enough. Drag reduction / stress are definitely factors. Drag reduction and an extra set of tires for stress isnt enough of a reason, possibly the extra set of tires was to gain better turning. The middle tires would act sort of as a pinpoint, and a moment (torque) would occur horizontally forcing the rear tires to accompany the turn better. The rotational movement from turning allows the centripetal force to push on the center of mass of the car, located between the rear tires and the rear front tires, towards the outside of the turn. The centripetal force, not really a force like gravity or magnetism, is more of a factor of angular acceleration. This is what makes you feel like your being pushed sideways out of your drivers seat as you turn fast, and is pretty much the same as the feeling of getting pushed into your drivers seat as you stomp the gas, except rotational rather than linear. Again, the angular acceleration pushed on the center of mass of the car, and since the middle wheel is a pinpoint of sorts it allows for better turning. As for why we don't see this on everyday cars, its impractical but at the accelerated speeds of F1 every inch counts. Just a dynamic analysis, it might not even have been incorporated into the designers ideas but may contribute to its superiority to the other F1 cars of the time. Again, this acts in addition to fiberwire's comment.

it's a video clip from "Lap Of The Gods" produced by AFAVA, compiled sometime in the 80's. There are about 25-30 clips in the series, all of them from cars in the mid to late 70's, none of them are fake.

I've seen one of these cars in the Donnington collection. It looks really weird compared to the other cars of the time. The front wheels are really tiny - the rims are about 12ins in diameter. The rears are really huge. They have it displayed with the bodywork lifted.

And nowhere else will you hear the term "rear front tire" . I suspect this was also banned to keep from confusing the mechanics :P

Jackie Stewart tries the 1976 Tyrrell P34 (aka the six-Wheeler). It was an amazing concept, to bad they banned 6 wheel cars in Formula 1. The NA 3.0 liter V8 pumps out 475bhp @10,000 rpm.
