This isn't planned people, the issue is as ThunderTT said. The announcer was told not to worry the public crowd with making a big deal out of it. In reality there is no pilot authorized to do that unless in an emergency situation. To answer the magnesium question I'll state this. Most aircaft flares are magnesium flares that burn at nearly 2000 degrees farenheit. If those caught fire they would burn a hole in the concrete.

the announcer said he had a shredded tire. he also commented on how the pilot handled it nicely. he was not trying to make it seem like part of the show...

it was not part of the show - sorry dude. chances are he landed with the parking brake on (yes, they have parking brakes) which is quite common. had my fair share of changing those. another reason its not "part of the show" the rims are magnesium, anybody know what happens when that starts on fire?

well, with flat/locked up tires, you have 2 options, catch a wire - which is harsh on everything, or a gentle landing with that finishing move. if not for the spin that thing would go on for a while as the nose gear has no brakes. and as far as our tax dollars - he just saved a ton. tires and brakes a lot cheaper than a new plane. use to be an plane captain for f-18s, even did work on the number 7 blue angels jet. what that pilot did was text book.
