This was a T.V programme that went out on primetime uk tv Live in the 80's or early 90's. The presenter and creator of the programme Knole Edmunds is a Big T.V star in The UK., Note its also Murrey Walker the Voice of F1 commentating I belive.

The Drivers were untrained/ semi trained members of the public . They both survived. As to why they were attempting this stunt is beyond me.
