No, gear's don't take away actual top speed they take away possible top speed, the cars are limited by hp! stock the car can do 150 in 4th gear but in this video I have to use 5th gear to even get close to that. In this case the gears just make use of the 5th gear from a fuel economy overdrive to a used gear. Before the gears I use to have to do a top speed run in 4th. The speedo IS correct it was regeared with the new ratio to match and checked by GPS!

I'm a Mustang guy through and through. On my 4th Stang, an 03 Cobra BUT, I'm sorry your speedo is way off because there's no way in hel* you could hit 162 even with your mods in a 97 Cobra. You don't say what gear you have but adding gears actually lowers your top speed compared to stock gear but of course adds more "seat of the pants" in the midrange.

I had my '98 to 160+, BUT only after underdrive pulleys, a magnaflow o/r x -pipe, 2 chamber flowmasters, and 3.73 gears. So it is possible.
