The same also applies for the Mazdaspeed 3. If I cheap out and get 91 octane and want to race someone, I just buy octane boost.

I have a speed 6 and have definitely become somewhat of an expert on the car. The 94 octane will indeed give you a bump in power because the adaptive ECU in this car responds aggressively to any sort of knock. Mazda was a little over-zealous with this. The manual says 93 or greater. I have noticed that this thing comes alive on 94 from Sunoco. It just doesn't quite run it's best on 91 because it isn't tuned for 91. It will run yes but having at least 93 is what is likes best. There is a world of difference between the timing advancement on a turbo engine and a naturally aspirated engine when it comes to octane. So the 350Z having 94 probably wouldn't make much of a difference.

Additionally, it has become the collective knowledge that the turbo on the speed6 is capable of more than we first thought. The turbo is capable of 18 psi before it leaves it's efficiency range and the reason power drops off at 5500 rpms is because of Mazda's ecu which starts closing down the throttle plate (it's throttle by wire in this car). This is easily remedied by some of the tuning solutions that are now available. With speed 6's breaking into the 12's and 11's on the horizon, these cars are definitely going to be surprising some of the cars that are used to ruling the roost.

everyone needs to STFU! we dont really know who won because the cars were to far away to tell in the first place...

A nismo 350Z editions (nismo track, and nismo enthusiast) was only sold in one year which was in 2003 and the only modifications were suspension and a muffler and had the nismo graphics.

plus i driven both cars, the MS6 suffers from small turbo syndrome... meaning it has loads of bottom end torque of 280 at 2k rpm and losses top-end by 5krpm on a 6200rpm redline... the Z's power band is in the midrange since its setup is for overall performance not top-end

ppl on these type of video forums need to be shot, how stupid do you guys get? i mean come on some of the comments i see for videos are just utter ridiculous

Stop making excuses. For starters, whats the cost of a "NISMO" equipped 350Z? The most expensive version of the 350Z I have seen at a Dealership was in the low-mid $30k range. the MS6 costs a few grand less than that. Both cars weigh about the same. To the comment on the 350Z using 94 Octane and making enough power to fill that gap, not likely. Both cars DO have active timing correction (ignition and cam) to adjust for different fuel grades, but the difference in power for a 350Z using higher octane is minimal compared to the MS6. A big factor is most likely the turbocharger on the Mazda, but thats speculative. Fact is, the 350Z got beat by a 2.3L 4cyl sedan. Live with it.

On to the next comment that bothered me was the AWD comment. So what? The MS6 is ONLY AWD when it needs to be. It actually functions as FWD most of the time and only sends a Maximum of 50% torque output to the rear wheels under severe traction loss. yes it might have helped from a dig, but the Z had much wider tires and still managed a great launch. I also want to point out that the MS6 had only a minor lead at the start, it gained the most ground half track and kept pulling away, suggesting it was out-powered on the top end as well.

Both cars are great platforms, both deserve a degree of respect, but stop crying and making excuses. For all any of us know, both cars are fairly even in acceleration, and it could have just come down to the drivers.

Yeah that's what i think too....Why would mazda manufacture a car that requires 94 octane, when not everyone even gets 94, i don't and i'm in california. only 3 octane points? That's not what won that race.
