With hundreds of different video formats and codecs on the market a constant
challenge for anyone in the industry is how to convert all of these different
formats to one or two common formats that the majority of people can view. We
convert all uploaded videos into Flash 8 at 528kbps and WM9 (Windows Media 9)
at a dual bitrate of 400 and 220kbps that is auto-selected based on available
bandwidth. Flash 8 is slightly more efficient for video quality than WM9 but it
uses MP3 which is about half as efficient as WM9's audio codec. If you have the
choice as to what format to upload in, we suggest WMV (Windows Media format).
We've found the least amount of problems. If that is not an option then we
would suggest MPEG4. If you choose AVI make sure you use a common video codec.
Quicktime is usually ok, but not as problem free for our encoders as other
formats. It's really best not to experiment with different codecs since we're
going to convert to our own formats anyways and little will be gained. The
following is a list of codecs we have successfully converted to Flash 8 and WM9
